Here’s an abbreviated list of the toxic ingredients in cosmetic & skin care products that we pledge never to use. There are many more worth avoiding, but these are the worst offenders.
We believe you and your skin will be able to tell the difference!
Ingredients never present in our products:
Aluminum (cosmetics, deodorants) – A metal that is toxic and has been labeled as a carcinogenic and mutagenic. May be linked to Alzheimer’s and breast cancer.
Barium (lipsticks) – A metal that’s toxic and has been banned from products in the EU for a long time.
Benzene (hairspray, nail polish remover) – A bone marrow poison whose fumes may be toxic and has been labeled a carcinogen.
Coal Tar (shampoo, cosmetics) – May also be called “FD,” “FDC,” or “FD&C color.” Known to cause cancer in animals and skin irritations.
Dioxins (paper products, feminine hygiene) – A by-product of waste incineration and bleaching of pulp and paper. Not found on labels, but only Totally Chlorine-Free (TCF) products that are bleached with hydrogen peroxide are safe. May cause birth defects, miscarriage, and cancer.
Formaldehyde (nail products) – Irritates mucous membranes, which can cause urination problems, internal bleeding, and cancer.
Imidazolidinyl Urea or Germall II / Diazolidinyl Urea or Germall 115 (widespread preservatives) – These release formaldehyde, see above.
Mercury (eyeshadow) – Banned in dental fillings and illegal to dispose of outdoors, this metal affects the nervous system and can be a factor in Candidiasis.
Nitrosamines (widespread) – Can form in products with chemicals that begin with DEA, MEA, or TEA. Known carcinogen.
Parabens (preservatives widespread) – Highly toxic and known to interfere with hormone balances.
Petrolatum (lip products, baby goods) – Causes sun sensitivity, inhibits the body’s natural moisturizing system, and interferes with hormone balance. May be linked to cancer.
Phthalates (cosmetics, personal goods, packing, toys) – Banned by the EU for use in cosmetics, these chemicals are suspected of causing birth defects and have been proven to cause liver, kidney, lung, and reproductive problems in animals.
Propylene Glycol or PEG (widespread) – Used to help products reach deeper into the skin, which allows more toxins to reach the bloodstream. Similar to chemical used to make anti-freeze.
PVP / VA Copolymer (hairspray, cosmetics) – Toxic, may assist in the inhalation of more toxins into the lungs.
Quaternary Ammonium Salts or QUATS (hair products, fabric, paper goods) – Make hair dry and prone to breakage, also known to be allergenic.
Sodium Laurel Sulfate or SLS (shampoo, cleansers, cosmetics) – Damages cell membranes and the immune system, contributes to hair loss and skin reactions.
Stearalkonium Chloride (conditioners, creams, fabric) – Toxic and prone to causing allergic reactions.
Synthetic Colors (widespread) – Many are believed to be carcinogenic.
Talc (widespread) – May cause lung problems when inhaled and ovarian cancer when used near genitals.
Triethanolamine or TEA (cleansers) – Causes allergic reactions and may be toxic with extended use.
